Start with a subject, then a destination

Landscape photography focuses on terrain, seasons and light; cultural photography calls for observation, conversation and time in a place. List two or three subjects you want to explore, then check whether the daily itinerary gives you time for them.

When comparing journeys in China and overseas, consider travel connections, time zones, language and consecutive days on the move. Two routes in the same destination can have very different photographic priorities and physical demands.

What should you check in a photographer-led tour?

Read the photographer’s profile, interests and published work, then check who is named for your departure. Their work can help you understand their perspective, but it does not replace the itinerary’s description of services.

If you want field instruction, image discussions or editing sessions, check that each is included. Travelling with a photographer, attending a workshop and photographing independently offer different experiences; choose according to how you want to learn and create.

Match the pace to your needs

Check departure times, walking distances, transfers and rest periods. Ask about routes involving sunrise starts, night photography, altitude or long walks before booking. Weather and local conditions affect photography; an itinerary cannot guarantee particular light or a particular image.

• Share your experience and whether you prefer slow photography, walking or easier transfers.
• Check camera, lens, tripod and charging requirements, starting with equipment you know.
• Make sure early starts, rest periods and free time also suit your companions.

Compare dates, costs and booking conditions

On each journey page, check dates, duration, inclusions, exclusions, accommodation and cancellation or change conditions. Confirm flights, visas and single-room supplements against that itinerary and your enquiry; another route may have different terms.
