01 / THE PHOTOGRAPHIC JOURNEY
Go beyond the view.
While much of the country is still feeling the chill of early spring, Nyingchi's peach blossoms form a pink sea along the Yarlung Tsangpo. Less well known is that highland rhododendrons deep in the gorge reach full bloom at the same time. Peach blossoms and rhododendrons share the frame, while snowy mountains and rainforest coexist: a spring landscape worth a special flight in April. Many visitors come to Nyingchi only for peach blossoms, unaware that rhododendrons blanket both sides of the gorge in April. In Bari and Talu villages, century-old rhododendron trees bloom along streams from the valley into the forest. Red, pink, white and purple flowers cover successive slopes like a spilled paint palette.
About the route
April brings a particularly generous spring to southeastern Tibet. If peach blossoms are Nyingchi's spring calling card, Bagai's rhododendrons are the surprise on its reverse.
